Welcome to
Seongbuk캠퍼스

Welcome to the Seongbuk POLY website!

About Me
My name is Tim Gorin, and I am the Director of Seongbuk POLY. Since 2001, I have been involved in some way with the POLY. I was a teacher at both Hwajung and Ilsan POLY campuses and then a manager at Ilsan POLY for several years before becoming Vice Director of that campus.

Afterward, I moved to POLY headquarters to manage both the curriculum development department as well as human resources, hiring teachers for the many POLY. Though this work was exciting, working in education is just not worth it if you do not get to see the children, so in 2006, I returned to working with students, acting as Vice Director of Mapo POLY while that campus was being set up.

In 2007, I opened my own POLY here in Seongbuk. Though I crave to return to teaching, I must be satisfied in sharing what I have learned about with our teachers. Having been at POLY since the beginning, I have personally either used the curriculum still being taught today or helped in its development. In addition to our curriculum, I have made it a goal to keep up with educational trends and research. I regularly pass on this knowledge to our teachers so that they can be better informed about teaching techniques and ideas.

On a more personal side, I feel that working with children is really the only thing that I can do. As a child, I loved both reading and science - two interests that I try to encourage as much as possible with our students. Books are the ultimate teacher, and if done right, children learn without knowing that they are learning - they do it because they love reading. Honestly, forget about education. Once you find the right book, reading is just FUN! Science might seem like a very serious subject, but to children, science is just the natural exploration of the world. Every child is a scientist, whether they know it or not.

So, I approach education with this in mind: life is about exploring and fun. As children, students can explore the world through books or live any number of adventures and fantasy through stories. The English they learn here will help them do it. As they grow older, their language skills will help them to have real adventures and explore the world in person. I hope to prepare them for the story of their lives.

About Our Teachers
You can see pictures of our teachers and read about them if you click the Our Teachers tab, but I will make a few general statements. I learned long ago that I cannot do everything. Though I would love to teach every child, that must be done by someone else that I hire to do the job. Still, like you, I want to best teachers and administrative staff possible. I make every effort to hire the best teachers possible. In fact, it is my hope that these individuals are better, smarter, and nicer than I am - because they are the ones who will be working directly with your children.

I also understand every parent's dilemma: students need to study, but studying too much can cause stress. Ultimately, the decision to attend an academy or not is up to the parents. For my part, I promise that all of our teachers have been instructed in teaching more dynamically. We try to exchange the traditional "sage on the stage" model, where a teacher lectures to students, for the more interesting "guide on the side" style of teaching, where students work in small groups or actually take turns teaching their peers while the teacher supervises. Each of our teachers is knowledgeable in the multiple-intelligence theory and attempts various methods to appeal to each kind of learner, making the lessons both more effect and interesting. Learning does not occur if the students are under too much stress or lack interest in the material, so learning must be fun in order to succeed.
